Spotlight on: Sealants and Adhesives
It’s common to find mould and damp in bedrooms but it is also common to find them in bathrooms especially around the edge of the bath or shower base. As such it is important to make sure that the areas around the bath and shower base are sealed correctly and tightly. But what is there to know about these types of sealants?
Silicone Sealants
These sealants are known as silicones and they are polymers that contain silicon and oxygen atoms. Because of the tight bonds between these atoms they can withstand a lot of heat and they also tend to be water resistant as the sealant can’t bond with the water molecules.
Because of this these sealants are excellent for protecting the edge of the bath and shower base from any water seeping in. If these areas were not sealed then the structural integrity of these areas would decrease dramatically and it could lead to serious problems.
These sealants are also used in areas where electrical and thermal insulation are necessary such as kitchen counters cooking utensils and other important features.
What Do You Need to Seal Effectively?
The first thing that you will need of course is a silicone sealant tube. One feature that is important to remember is that the sealant tube has a lot of pressure applied on the inside meaning that it is difficult to extract the sealant by hand.
As such the second that you will need is a sealant gun; these are engineered to ensure that every little bit of sealant is used in whatever project you are working on.
It’s also important to know that when you use the sealant you need to make sure that it has been properly applied. Therefore having an item that can be used to smooth down the sealant would be beneficial.
If you are using an adhesive rather than silicone sealant however then it is vital to use something like a glue spreader or just a simple applicator setto make sure that the glue is applied directly to the specific place.
Using sealant and adhesives is essential if you are working on a refurbishment of a client’s house as you want to make sure that every appliance and component that you install is as safe and secure as possible.
