Blum 71B9780 CLIP top BLUMOTION Inset Thick-Door Hinge

The Blum 71B9780 is a specialist 95° concealed hinge for thick and profiled furniture doors in an inset application. It allows a compatible door up to 32mm thick to close within the cabinet opening, leaving the cabinet sides visible around the front.

The hinge has a 35mm knock-in cup with integral fixing dowels for efficient production installation. BLUMOTION soft close is built into the hinge, providing smooth, controlled closing without requiring a separate damper.

This is a thick/profile-door hinge for timber, MDF, chipboard and suitable composite furniture fronts. It is not a narrow aluminium-frame hinge.

Designed for inset thick doors

An inset door closes inside the cabinet opening rather than covering the cabinet sides. This requires different hinge-arm geometry and mounting-plate positioning from an overlay or half-overlay installation.

The 71B9780 is designed to provide the additional clearance required by thick and profiled doors. However, the maximum 32mm thickness does not guarantee that every door profile will clear the cabinet when opened.

Edge mouldings, projecting profiles, door radius, drilling distance and the cabinet construction all affect the required gap. Use the Blum planning table and complete a trial installation before drilling a production batch.

Knock-in cup fixing

The hinge cup has integral dowels that are pressed into a correctly prepared three-hole boring pattern. This produces a consistent production fixing without separate cup screws.

Knock-in does not mean that the hinge should be struck directly with a hammer. Use suitable Blum insertion equipment or a correctly set boring and insertion machine to press the cup squarely into the door.

This fixing differs from INSERTA. An INSERTA hinge can be locked into its prepared holes using the lever on the cup, whereas the 71B9780 relies on press-in dowels.

Integrated BLUMOTION soft close

BLUMOTION is integrated into the hinge and slows the door during the final stage of closing. This gives thicker furniture doors a quieter, more controlled closing action and reduces impact on the cabinet.

The damping function can be switched off at an individual hinge when required. This is useful where a smaller or lighter door does not require damping from every hinge.

Use matching CLIP top BLUMOTION hinges throughout each door. Blum advises that CLIP top BLUMOTION and non-BLUMOTION hinges should not be combined on the same door.

Inset mounting-plate position

At the factory hinge setting, Blum’s planning guidance requires the mounting-plate fixing position to be moved back from the cabinet front by the door thickness plus 1.5mm.

This is a planning starting point rather than a substitute for a trial installation. The final position depends on the mounting-plate height, drilling distance, door profile and required gaps.

Adjustment and door removal

The hinge arm clips onto a compatible Blum mounting plate without tools. This allows the door to be attached or removed without disturbing the plate or the adjustment settings.

Side, depth and height adjustments allow the finished door position and gaps to be refined after installation. The mounting plate is not included and must be ordered separately from our Blum CLIP top mounting plates.
