The Blum 71B453T is a specialist concealed hinge for thin furniture fronts measuring 8–14mm thick. Its innovative EXPANDO‑T fixing system provides a secure attachment in thin materials without requiring a conventional 35mm hinge-cup hole.

This makes the hinge suitable for contemporary furniture designs using thin chipboard, MDF, HDF, HPL, mineral composites, selected stone composites and ceramic fronts, provided the chosen material has sufficient strength and stability.

Integrated BLUMOTION soft-close delivers a smooth and controlled closing action, while the 110° opening angle and zero-protrusion design make the hinge particularly useful for cabinets containing internal drawers, shelves and pull-outs.

EXPANDO‑T fixing for thin fronts

Conventional concealed hinges require a relatively deep 35mm cup hole. This can be unsuitable for thin fronts because insufficient material remains beneath the hinge cup.

EXPANDO‑T uses expanding fixings inserted into a much smaller prepared drilling pattern. Tightening the fixing screws causes the dowels to expand inside the front material, creating a secure connection without a conventional cup recess.

The correct drilling dimensions and tightening torque must be used for the selected material. Installation should be completed by an experienced furniture manufacturer, particularly when working with stone, composite or ceramic fronts.

Suitable front materials

Blum has tested EXPANDO‑T with several thin-front materials, including chipboard with sufficient transverse tensile strength, MDF, HDF, high-pressure laminate, mineral composite materials, quartz composite artificial stone, Nero Assoluto natural granite and suitable ceramic panels.

Material thickness alone does not guarantee suitability. The front must have sufficient strength and stability to retain the fixing securely. A trial installation is recommended before starting a production batch.

Zero protrusion for internal pull-outs

The 71B453T has zero-protrusion geometry in an overlay application. When the door is fully opened, it does not project unnecessarily into the cabinet opening.

This provides clearance for internal drawers, pull-out shelves and storage mechanisms positioned behind the hinged door. The cabinet and mounting-plate positions must still follow Blum’s planning dimensions.

Integrated BLUMOTION soft-close

BLUMOTION is incorporated into the hinge arm and slows the front during the final closing movement. This provides a smooth, quiet close and helps reduce impact on thin or brittle front materials.

The damping function can be switched off on an individual hinge. This allows the closing performance to be adjusted for small or lightweight doors.

Installation and adjustment

The EXPANDO‑T fixings are placed into the correctly drilled front and tightened to the torque specified for the chosen material. The hinge arm then clips onto a compatible Blum mounting plate without tools.

Side, height and depth adjustment allow the finished door position and cabinet gaps to be refined after installation.

The mounting plate is not included. Choose the required plate height and cabinet fixing method from our Blum CLIP top mounting plates.

Optional opening-angle stops can reduce the opening movement to approximately 85° or 92° where adjacent walls, handles or furniture components restrict door travel.
