It's a Cover Up - What's a Veneer and Why Do I Need One?

By Martin Hart on Thu 05 March 2020

For many people, DIY terminology is something that's not all too familiar. For a tradesman or a DIY fanatic, a veneer is a blissfully simple concept, but for plenty of other people it's an alien word. It's something to do with your dentistry...right? Well, yes, but it was more related to wood before it was to do with teeth, so read on if you'd like to know a bit more about using veneers in your home...

What's a Veneer?

To describe a veneer in the simplest possible terms, it's a thin slice of wood that's glued onto another piece of wood in the manner of ‘a covering'. Veneers are usually a matter of millimetres thick, and they are often made by either ‘peeling' a tree trunk or finely slicing rectangular wooden blocks. You'll probably be familiar with plywood, and will have seen the different layers that are used in its construction. Well, each of these layers is a veneer. That's really all there is to it.

Making a Veneer

However, there's obviously more that could be said. Veneers are actually hugely efficient in terms of material usage, as they negate the need for wood to be sawn from a log. This means there's very little waste, and, because every tree is different, you'll always get the inherent uniqueness that you'd find in any piece of wooden furniture. Things like patterns in grain only occur once, so you'll never have a ‘samey' appearance when you start using veneers.

Why Would You Want One?

Which brings us onto ‘why would you want a veneer?' Well, for lots of reasons. If the eco-friendly aspect of the manufacturing process isn't enough for you, then remember that some projects which rely on veneers wouldn't be possible using just solid wood; temperature and humidity would cause too many fluctuations for the finished product to be stable.

Affordability

If that's not enough for you, then veneers are also a fantastic and affordable way to improve the aesthetics of your home. Imagine how much a solid oak surface would cost, then contemplate how much you'd save if only the top few millimetres were made from expensive oak. You'd get exactly the same great appearance, but for a mere fraction of the cost. Everyone's happy.

As you can see, veneers of all descriptions are excellent to use around your home, and here at Hart Wholesale we can provide a range of options to meet your every need.
